Charles I. Martin and Lou-Ida Martin papers, 1892-1937.

Personal & business correspondence of both Charles & Lou-Ida Martin and other papers. Included are personal letters; letters of recommendation for Charles for the position of chief of the Militia Bureau in Washington, D. C.; and letters of regret after he failed to obtain the position. The bulk of the collection consists of personal letters between Charles and Ida-Lou Martin. Charles I. Martin was a strong advocate for the Kansas National Guard, and throughout the collection he defends the need for a National Guard in the United States. Included are materials relating to Charles's service with the 20th Kansas Infantry in the Spanish-American War, his World War I service, his work as a legislator, and Lou-Ida's involvement in the Kansas Women Lawyers Association & the American Legion Auxiliary. The collection also contains resolutions in tribute to Charles Martin, 1923 Feb. 23, from the Adjutants General Association of the United States and a history of the organization, 1923 Jan. 16, as well as a brief history of the militia and National Guard, [1917?]. Also included are items relating to trouble along the U.S.-Mexican border and the 70th Brigade, 35th Division, in World War I.
